Whether you’re going to be traveling for personal reasons or for business, Christmas travel is often a madhouse. If you want to make sure that you get to your destination without any fuss or additional cost, there are a few tips that you might want to consider.
Don’t Wait for a Good Deal
Somewhere along the line people began assuming that last minute deals are always available. Last minute deals are fantastic for times when people aren’t traveling — but during busier times, it’s far more difficult to get a flight. You will see prices increasing rather than decreasing towards the holiday season.
Search for Nearby Airports
You can use Google’s Flight Search Tool (flights.google.com) to look at nearby airports — when you select your flights, just select the “All Airports” option. An airport only 50 miles away could have a far better deal, sometimes even being hundreds of dollars less. And they could even be closer to your destination; don’t assume the larger airport is best. Moreover, smaller airports mean fewer delays come the holiday season.
Prices Too High? Come Back in a Few Minutes
Do prices seem abnormally high? While you shouldn’t wait to book, try booking again in about an hour. Try to book at least ten times. It may sound unusual, but there’s a reason for this. Prices fluctuate based on demand and when there is a highly sought after flight, the prices will bounce back and forth. By waiting a few minutes, you may be able to catch a much lower rate. It’s not that the website is giving you the wrong pricing but rather that a lot of people happen to be looking at the same page you are at the same time.
Fiddle With Your Dates and Times
While it may seem inconvenient, a small adjustment can make a huge difference. If you don’t have trouble sleeping on the plane, flying out the night of Thanksgiving could save you a lot of money. Likewise, staying with family and flying out a few days later could also drastically cut costs.
Don’t forget to arrange for ground transportation in advance while you’re booking your flights! Trying to schedule transportation when you have a flight to catch is a sure recipe for disaster, especially with holidays as busy as Thanksgiving.
