shutterstock_202241482Business travel may seem exciting and glamorous to many people. However, to the thousands of Americans who travel on a regular basis for work, these trips can get hectic and tedious. Several hours of flight or drive are often followed by back to back meetings and presentations. Clients and bosses expect you to stay active and energetic while your mind and body seek some rest. A few simple steps can, nonetheless, boost your stamina and prepare you for every eventuality.

Stay hydrated: Dehydration is one of the top causes of fatigue. Drink lots of water throughout the day to improve blood circulation. Water helps transport nutrients and oxygen to every part of the body including the brain. You may also opt for energy drinks which provide both electrolytes and fluids at the same time.

Healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet is also essential for retaining strength and stamina. While finding healthy snacks and meals during travel may be not be easy, opt for fruits, vegetables, energy bars, and nuts instead of chips, sodas and alcoholic beverages.

Exercise: Most business travelers blame their hectic schedule for poor fitness, which is in turn, related to reduced energy levels. It is, therefore, important to stretch, jump and twist at every available opportunity. When traveling by road, stop and go for a short hike or jog. Take advantage of your hotel gym or pool. Just 30 to 45 minutes of physical activity or a few minutes of meditation each day will do wonders in most cases.

Fresh air: Contrary to the popular perception, indoor air is more polluted than the external environment. When you spend prolonged periods of time in airports, hotel rooms, and board rooms, you inhale low quality air which exhausts your body. Step out from time to time, and enjoy some fresh air. You will feel refreshed and rejuvenated within minutes.

Sleep well: A good night’s sleep is also essential for reducing lethargy and fatigue. Your travel schedule may, nonetheless, prevent you from sleeping for eight hours at a stretch. Take naps whenever possible. Phone calls and social media chats can wait. Save time for sleep and exercise.

Coffee: If you are used to morning coffee, do not skip it during travel as it can lead to unwanted withdrawal headaches. Excessive consumption of caffeinated drinks, on the other hand, cause dehydration and anxiety. Hence, limit your coffee or tea intake as much as possible.

Free time: Business travelers tend to pack their schedule with meetings and work. They hope to accomplish everything quickly and get back home. A few hours of free time during the day will, however, energize you and help you work more efficiently. Read your favorite book or watch your favorite show to refresh your mind and relax your body.

With little planning, your business travel can become more productive and enjoyable. You will be able to maintain your energy levels and will have the stamina to reach your goals. Strike the right balance between fun and work for best results.
