What to Eat and Not Eat Before You Fly

Posted on: December 9th, 2015 by Denver Signature Transportation No Comments

what to eatMany people grab something quick to eat before boarding a plane, only to pay for their decision mid-flight or shortly after landing. While it might not seem that food has much to do with flying, in reality, the things you eat are the difference between having an enjoyable and comfortable flight and not. To ensure that your flight is the best it can be, consider the list of foods that you should and should not consume prior to flying.

Foods to Eat

  • Low Sodium—Whatever food you eat before boarding a plane should be low in salt. By choosing low sodium foods, you will avoid being bloated and gassy.

  • Smoothie—A nice, fresh smoothie is also an acceptable choice when flying. Something made with fresh fruit/vegetables and natural yogurt is delicious, filling, and soothing on the stomach. Just make sure you choose something without a lot of sugar, which causes fatigue.

  • Fresh Oranges—This is another excellent food choice prior to flying. For one thing, oranges are loaded with vitamins, and considering that you will be inside a plane full of germs, the fruit will help. However, fresh oranges also hydrate the body and produce a natural burst of energy.

  • Protein—Whether as baked chicken, nuts, cheese, or tofu, protein will keep you energized while not upsetting the stomach. All too often, people grab protein wrapped in bread or embellished with greasy condiments. Instead, keep the protein natural and simple.

Foods NOT to Eat

  • Fast Food—Regardless of what it is, you want to avoid eating fast food before getting on a plane, because fast food is saturated with grease. Once you’re at a high altitude, there is a good chance you will start to experience heartburn, gas, and bloating.

  • Garlic—Although garlic is healthy and delicious, it is not the best food to consume when flying. Garlic causes bad breath that can make the flight miserable for other passengers seated nearby. Remember, the compounds of garlic absorb into the lungs and bloodstream, so even if you brush your teeth or use mints, the strong aroma lingers.

  • Sugar-Free Gum or Candy—To prevent ears from clogging during takeoff, many people chew gum or suck on candy. If you need to do this, just be sure you stay clear of sugar-free products. The sweeteners used in these products are notorious for causing diarrhea, gas, and bloating.

  • Carbonated Beverages—Even if you’re tempted to grab a soda or other beverage with carbonation, wait until after reaching your destination, in that these lead to bloating and gas.

Hiring a Limousine Company

To further enhance a positive experience when flying, you can hire a reputable limousine company. In doing so, you will have a chauffeur meeting you at the gate upon landing, loading any luggage, and driving you to your destination, hassle free.
